Kazed Video Reviews: Final Destination 5 (2011)

[spoiler]WOW.

I was actually looking forward to the supposed 'Final' chapter of the franchise, unlike the last one, which was basically just a dumbed-down version of it's predecessors.

What I found when I came out of the cinema after watching FD5 was that it was actually quite a clever film. I was pleasantly surprised at how the film capped off a rather interesting franchise.

I won't give anything away, but the way that the film ended was seriously unexpected. I mean, not something you'd expect from a Final Destination film.

The film itself was actually quite entertaining. In comparison to the last one, this film sprays fecal matter all over it.

I mentioned in an earlier post that what keeps (kept) this franchise alive in the past was the absolutely ridiculously creative ways they killed the characters. Sure, some of them were just things falling on people, but a stone through a head? A ladder through an eye? Death by spanner? these things are but a small example of some of the brilliant deaths in these films.

The cast in this film was as expected for a Final Destination film. You have the typical collection of characters; a hot girl, a couple, another couple, the geeky guy who's obviously going to die- wait, they all die. The characters in Final Destination 5 are essentially the characters in the past films, but with different names and faces. Character-wise, originality is basically non-existent.

Despite it's half-hearted attempt at a story, what made this film was it's brilliant (and sometimes amusing) ways the characters were killed off.

In a few words, Final Destination 5 was, in essence, exactly the same as it's counterparts, but the cleverly inserted twist at the end makes it that much better.

Great way to end the Final Destination franchise, if it wasn't for the sub standard performances and lacklustre storyline, it would've been great, but unfortunately, it fell slightly below this high mark.
